GETTING MY DUCKS IN A ROW PART 19

I needed to talk to WHIRLY SQUIRRELY,  I liked that name that the Boppfites gave him more than Daniel.  I sent a mental messge to him and my phone rang! It was W.S.   He said he was on the way,  he was drawing protons from a neutron star to power his ship.  "I will see you tonight, I want to set the ship down when it is dark."   I had some time to kill, so I thought I would contact Bobby's Father, Carl.  It was nearing five in the evening, and I thought of Dad getting off the bus, coming home from work.  I drove the Hudson over to Verdugo Rd and Sunview and waited for him.  The bus pulled up and dropped Daddy off.  I loved my Daddy, and as I, said before , I rued the fact that I never went over to give him a ride home.  I had a home and clothes and many things because of Daddy and Mama.  He walked across the street and I yelled "Mr. Fishback".  He turned and smiled and came walking over.  "Get in, I will give you a ride home."  He asked "How did you know I get off here?"   I replied "you told me that when we had that wonderful Sunday lunch."   "I'll be darned "  he said.  He began talking as we drove the five blocks.  "Bob is different now,  he studies his books hard, in fact he reads ahead.  I just don't know what happened to him, but he changed after that night you took him for a ride.  Edith and I certainly thank you....what did you say to him that night?"   I wanted to be honest, so I said, "I took him downtown and showed him a bar where a drunk was sick. I told  him he would wind up like that if he did not prepare himself for life or ever started drinking,"  My father was not angry, but amazed.  "To be honest, I never felt equipped to be Bob's Father.  There was too much tension in our home, not very much fun and games...much too serious...I never played ball with him, I was too demanding.  I wanted him to be a showcase kid.  I wanted to tell of his achievements in school; I wanted him to play the piano for others." he said.   I felt love over flowing for him and I patted him on the shoulder and said, "You have done a wonderful job in the crucial areas...Bobby will be alright someday, but it may take a lifetime!   I needed to get home for Whirly's visit, so I excused myself and he said:  "I want you to reach out to him, do what I never did, come down to his level,  play with him..he loves model airplanes and other things I don't understand......like candles, and sad defeatism music.  You are welcome here any time."  We shook hands and I went home to wait for Whirly.   (to be continued)
